Parenting in Blended Families: My House, My Rules?

I've been a 'single mother', for about as long as... I've been a mother, actually. I knew I'd date, and at some point maybe even date someone with children of his own. A year ago, I did not see myself in a serious relationship at this point in my life, with a step-child added to the mix, but that's my life.

Let's pretend this is a play, and I'll lay out all the details for you.

The Cast:
Controlling mother (me)
Laid-back father (boyfriend)
16 month old only child (Chloe)
2 year old child with a different sibling at each home (Madi)

The Summary:
Madi has a full-time brother (3 years) at home, recently diagnosed with autism. She learns a lot of her behavior from him - like the hitting, extreme fighting over toys, and tantrums. All kids do it, although her tantrums are unlike anything I've ever seen (personally) in any other children.

Chloe is in turn learning to hit, bite, and fight back, both in general self-defense, but sometimes just to be mean.

But parenting babies is quite simple, when you think about it. When they hit and bully, they get disciplined. Whether that be through time out, or depending on the severity of the act, just a general eye-level 'no'.

Babies hitting

The Sequel:
Fast forward a couple of years, and we will have children, not just babies. They will be doing worse things than just hitting each other. There will by lying and sneaking, and I don't even want to think about what else.

How do you know how to parent when you have one full-time child in the house, and one part-time child?

Do you follow the rule of 'my house, my rules', and make your own rules for both children to follow? Do you discuss rules with the other two parents so the rules are consistent?

Do you follow the rule of 'my child, my rules'? Which sounds like a decent option if the children in question were older and already knew what their rules were before the parents pushed them together?

Do you have a good cop/bad cop situation?

The thing is, there's no real answer, is there? We are two single parents with a child each, with completely opposite parenting personalities. Boyfriend is laid-back, and happy as long as everyone else is happy. He's not as concerned with the consequences of our actions. He gives in to a tantrum to end it, not thinking that giving in to them is what's causing them to happen more often.

I'm not sure if I'm a strict mother, but I recently realized that I'm a bit of a control freak. I want the girls to know what the rules are. Whether they follow them or not, I want them to at least know what's right and wrong, and what they will be punished for.

We both have to work on our parenting personalities. Boyfriend needs to be a little more in control, instead of letting the little ones control him. I have to learn to stop being so controlling, and let things slide every now and then.

As long as we're on the same page, this parenting a blended family thing won't be too hard, right?

10 Things I Did This Week

I'm tired of the long, boring recaps. I'm sure you are too, and I'm sure I'll keep doing them. But for now I've decided to just do a quick list of things I've done this week. This was meant to be posted on Saturday, so here are 10 things I've done in the past week and a half.

1. Played Phase 10 Card Game with boyfriend, as well as Monopoly on the Wii.
2. Made the meatloaf from my food challenge. It turned out so yummy.
3. Heard my alarm go off at 7:05 am, got my top half dressed for work, reset my alarm for 7:35 am, and crawled back into bed.
4. Got caught up on the current season of How I Met Your Mother.
5. Shared a car with boyfriend. All week.
6. Pinned a bunch of wedding stuff, even though I'm nowhere near about to get married.
7. Had a day and night alone with boyfriend - we visited friends and had some hot tub time.
8. I started my list of 101 goals for Day Zero Project.
9. I discovered the song I Drive Your Truck by Lee Brice, which made me cry a couple of times, reminding me of my grandfather. But don't worry, he's still living :)
10. Got the pictures that boyfriend's sister took of us on their two family get-togethers (December 8th & 23rd). I'm only realizing now that boyfriend wore the same shirt both nights.

I completed 5 new recipes

In November, I challenged myself to try out 5 recipes in 5 weeks.

[ Baked Potato Soup ]

My recipes were:

With two bonus recipes:
- Baked potato soup

The end date was Christmas day, and by that point I had only made the Doritos Taco bake. Which was good, but not fantastic. I might try it again if I had someone to help me eat it.

I also made regular old Sloppy Joes for the first time. I used a store-bought sauce mix, and wasn't a fan of it so I might try homemade the next time around. I'll let this count as a new recipe completed.

Since then, I got serious and bought ingredients I needed for a few other things, and ended up making meatloaf (with crispy smashed potatoes as a side, also a new recipe - view on Pinterest) and baked potato soup, with slightly altered recipes. I'll be sharing those altered recipes soon, if only for my own safekeeping.

They both turned out so good that I scarfed them down at supper time, then took leftovers to work for lunch, and cleaned my plate then as well.

My body is currently thanking me for taking a break from the deep fryer.

So I'll give myself a break (hey, Christmas was busy) and say I completed 5 new recipes.

Here's to hoping for just as much luck next time around!

It's all about the midnight kiss

[ via ]
I've broken a lot of "rules" lately. My own personal rules to take pictures. I rarely forget, where the babies are concerned. Birthdays, holidays, funny faces, check!

But when it comes to me and boyfriend?

His birthday? Miss. Mine? Miss. Making it official? Miss. Our first New Year's Eve? Miss.

Missing a photo opportunity for New Year's Eve makes me the saddest, because I was in a dress and he was in a tie and we looked pretty great. It  was also an amazing night.

So maybe just this once it's okay to let the picture thing slide, because I was busy living life instead of documenting it.

We went to a house party with his friends, and brought along one of mine.

Drinks were had. There was middle of the winter outdoor hot tub time. There were a ton of laughs.

And a horrible New Year's Eve countdown.

"10... 9... 8... Oh, it's midnight."

But the midnight kiss? Nothing short of amazing. As was the rest of the night, and the next morning when we got to lay in bed for a couple of hours just talking. I think I fell in love with him all over again. But don't tell him that. He's already got a big enough ego.

It's 2013. Expect me to get a little nostalgic over the next couple of days.

2012 in Review

Last New Year's Eve... I rang in the New Year by... sleeping. I was in bed around 10 that night. Chloe was on her 3rd or so night of waking up about 3-5 times a night. I was exhausted. Happy friggin' New Year.

January

- I took a trip to visit two of my best friends. I was there for almost a week and it was such a great time. While I was there, I also got to visit with my step-father (mother's ex-husband), and he got to meet Chloe.

- I got my first message online from a certain boy, and at first I didn't bother with a response. But then I did. And after giving up any expectations, we fell into easy conversation online, exchanged phone numbers and started texting.

- We visited my grandfather and got our first set of professional photos done together.

- January 19, I met boyfriend and Lil M for the first time. He was nice, but I had no idea if it would go anywhere. We hung out a time or two more before the month ended.

- Chloe turned 4 months old this month and started putting her feet in her mouth.

February

- I worked for the first time since having Chloe. My cousin babysat and all went pretty well.

- The first Sunday in February I started officially dating boyfriend.

- I went to the Paul Brandt concert.

- My sweet girl turned 5 months and started taking naps in her own bedroom :(

March

- I visited mother and grandfather for awhile.

- Sister and nephew stayed with me for a couple of nights while they looked for an apartment. I almost went crazy.

- My girl turned 6 months and coughing was her favorite noise to make.

April

- Chloe's first Easter!

- Boyfriend had his birthday and we became the same age. We spent an entire weekend together for the first time. He also moved to an apartment much closer to mine.

- Chloe turned 7 months, and was sitting on her own very well, and could sometimes go from her hands and knees into the sitting position.

May

- I went to M's bachelorette party. It was a great time.

- We made our first trip to the ER with Chloe. Pretty scary, but nothing was wrong.

- Chloe turned 8 months.
